The Neotropical ambrosia beetle genus Camptocerus Dejean 1821 was revised. The monophyly of the genus was tested and confirmed using 66 morphological characters in a cladistic analysis. Thirty-one species are recognized of which 12 are new to science. Camptocerus species exhibit interesting morphologies such as a wide range of colors, including metallic green, modifications of the frons and elytra, strong sexual dimorphism and type and density of setae. Despite these characteristics ambiguity exists in the generic boundary between Camptocerus and Cnemonyx Eichhoff 1868 because of several homoplastic characters observed in some species. A revision of Camptocerus is nearly complete which will address this issue.
