Many factors must have stimulated the enormous radiation of species in the leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae; 40,000 species). Host plant association has been promoted as the most important factor driving this diversification. I focus on subsociality as an additional driver of evolution in two chrysomelid clades, Cassidinae and Chrysomelinae.
