Aleurodicus dugesii (Giant Whitefly) is a common pest of hibiscus. Hibiscus is commonly planted near buildings and fences, which absorb and radiate heat. I tested whether the populations of whiteflies and their parasitoids found in hibiscus were influenced by microclimates. I quantified population sizes on hibiscus near structures that faced north, east, south, or west. Southern/western facing hibiscus had the largest populations of whiteflies. This study suggests that structures influence microclimates, which influences the success of the giant whitefly. This study is useful in implementing intelligent landscape design to avoid pest infestation.
