Evolution of the tenebrionid subfamily Phrenapatinae, with an emphasis on pupal characters

The subfamily Phrenapatinae contains approximately 165 species in three tribes (Archaeoglenini, Penetini, Phrenapatini). The peculiar biology and morphology of some of these beetles is unique within the Tenebrionidae. Phylogenetically important structures of tenebrionid adults, such as defense glands and female ovipositor, are greatly reduced or absent in members of this subfamily therefore other data sets should be explored for informative characters. Pupal characters have shown potential for studies on relationships of tenebrionids although available material is relatively scarce. Results of a study on Phrenapatinae pupae will be discussed.
