An overview of the personal protective measures such as information, protective clothing, netting, and particularly the use of skin and clothing insect repellents to protect US military troops in the field from arthropod bites and vector-borne diseases will be presented. In addition, the Department of Defense Insect Repellent System, the new camouflage face paint insect repellent formulations, the development of the new standard military insect repellent candidate, SS-220, and the CDC recommended use of Picaridin and p-menthane 3,8-diol (PMD) as alternatives to DEET will be presented.
