Moving toward subterranean termite IPM in China

Li Xiaoying Li, wxlixy@jsmail.com.cn, Wuxi Termite Control Institute, 22 Liufangsheng Lane, Wuxi, Jiangsu, China

Subterranean termites are destructive pests to structures in China. The economic important species in China include Coptotermes formosanus, Reticulitermes chinensis, R. flaviceps of Rhinotermitidae, and Odontotermes formosanus and Macrotermes barneyi of Termitidae. Reticulitermes species and C. formosanus are pests to houses while the two termitids causes damage to agricultural dykes and dams. The Chinese government considers termite damage an important public safety issue. Termite control policy of the National Termite Control Administrative is “prevention first with integrated control and management.” Regulations by the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Construction mandate that preventative measures are taken for all new construction as well as existing buildings under re-modeling to achieve a long-term termite control and to guarantee the housing safety. In the past, the chemical barrier was the primary tool for the preventative control for subterranean termites, while the combination of spot treatment and chemical barrier was used for remedial control. Chlordane and mirex are two insecticides used extensively for subterranean termite control. In preparation for the total ban of chlordane and mirex, we plan to conduct a large-area termite IPM demonstration project by using baits in the monitor-control system as the core technology, and barrier techniques, building designs, and wood preservatives, etc., as the supplemental technologies. The successful implementation of an IPM strategy with baits in monitor-control system as the core technology will result in a safer and better management of subterranean termite population in a large area.
