IPM for subterranean termites in Malaysia - case studies, feasibility and challenges

Chow Yang Lee, chowyang@usm.my, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Vector Control Research Unit, School of Biological Sciences, Minden, Penang, Malaysia and Leng Choy Lee, lllee@dow.com, Dow AgroSciences, 1225 Medalist Drive, Morrisville, NC.

Subterranean termite control in SE Asia has always been ‘reactive,’ rather than proactive. Normally, a control program is executed only upon a termite infestation has been detected. Although IPM concept is not novel to pest management professionals in Malaysia, it is rarely adopted. In this study, we discussed several case studies involving IPM for subterranean termites (Coptotermes sp) in buildings and structures Malaysia in moderate to large-scale settings. The feasibility of carrying out such program, as well as the challenges faced by pest management professionals are discussed.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Coptotermes gestroi (Asian subterranean termite)
Keywords: Termite management, IPM
