Since the year 2000 various communities of Santiago and the fifth region of Chile have initiated integrated pest management programs for the control of subterranean termites. These efforts include the participation of the Chilean government, non-profit foundations, research institutions, municipalities, homeowners, and private industry. Municipalities are offered training for the detection and diagnosis of their subterranean termite problems. Different financing schemes have been implemented to permit the management of this introduced pest species. After identification of the problem areas and funding acquisitions, protocols for area-wide mangement are implemented. Methodologies for the use of the Sentricon system have been developed with great success. Cultural controls, to reduce conditions conducive to termite development, are discussed and implemented with all participants. Education and continuous participation of all interested groups is fundamental in community-based programs.
