Introduction: A framework for subterranean termite IPM

Nan-Yao Su, nysu@ufl.edu, University of Florida, Department of Entomology & Nematology, Fort Lauderdale Research & Education Center, 3205 College Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL

Recent development of reduced-pesticide technologies such as monitoring-baiting system provides a tool that meets the cost-benefit model of sustainable IPM for subterranean termites, but the majority of the pest control industry continues to use the conventional liquid insecticides. Area-wide projects for population management of subterranean termites have been planned and/or implemented in several communities, most of which adopt the monitoring-baiting system as the core technology. These projects share a common goal of developing a comprehensive IPM program. There is a need to develop a general framework and guideline so that a subterranean termite IPM program can be further implemented in other communities and accepted by the industry.
