As part of Dow AgroScience's commitment to accelerate learning and improve knowledge about its products, Dow AgroSciences has added game-based learning as a component of its robust technical training strategies. Research shows that serious games, when designed correctly, can be highly effective for learning, linking the fun of games with the essentials of effective learning. Game-based learning is a completely immersive, interactive experience with a game goal, rules, and repeatable set of game mechanics.

Convinced that game-based learning is a viable and exciting learning strategy, Dow AgroSciences developed and piloted Transform® Guru, a learning game, for the launch of Transform® WG. The game incorporated spaced repetition (three different version of many of the questions), immediate feedback (correct or incorrect response, with feedback to ensure that the correct information is remembered), and real-world, problem-solving scenarios (rehearsal, practice) to challenge game players and ensure retention of foundational knowledge. Transform® Guru was launched successfully with sales reps, field scientists, and external customers in the mid-South in 2012, and the response to the game was both positive and enthusiastic. In 2014, Transform® Guru was selected in the Horizon Interactive Awards competition as a bronze award recipient in two different categories, “Websites—Games" and "Websites—Training and eLearning." This prestigious international competition recognizes outstanding achievement among interactive media producers.

This paper describes the basic components of a successful learning game and provides suggestions for educators on how to appropriately use games to teach entomological concepts.
