The tribe Myrmeleontini currently contains over 200 species and has a cosmopolitan distribution. The tribe is largely composed of the genus Myrmeleon and includes many taxa which are difficult to distinguish based on external characters. Important morphological characters, both historical and novel, are discussed in regards to their descriptive and phylogenetic utility. The results of a preliminary phylogeny based on morphology are also discussed
