The Christmas Mountains were acquired, September 2011 by the Texas State University System, represent a pristine, open-air classroom located in the Chihuahuan deset, just north of Big Bend ranch. During May 18-23, 2014, preliminary sampling took place with multiple light traps, hand collecting, and mercury vapor lighting. This preliminary start of a much larger biodiversity survey hopes to help establish a baseline of insect diversity for the Christmas Mountains.
