Of all the areas of biology, entomology offers the greatest chance of finding a field of enquiry all your own. When a subject is largely unexplored, imagination and inventiveness are required to devise the necessary methods and gadgets, but truly new discoveries bring joy and excitement to the curious and adventuresome mind.  I will illustrate this pioneering process with the exploration of the architecture of the underground nest of ants, an unknown world under our feet.
