The discovery in 2001 of the arboreal termite, Nasutitermes corniger, in Broward county, Florida was the first record of a non-native geographical establishment by a termite species in the family Termitidae. In 2003 a task force consisting of individuals from Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the University of Florida, Florida pest management companies and several basic pesticide manufacturers was formed to initiate a cooperative eradication effort of this arboreal termite. Initial control efforts in 2003 with various termiticides followed by surveys and spot termiticide treatments over the next eight years accomplished eradication of this exotic species. This cooperative effort represents the first eradication of an exotic social insect in the U.S.
