Sulfoxaflor is a new sulfoximine insecticide which has shown excellent activity against a wide range of sap-feeding insects. It provides fast-acting and extended residual control of target insects. When registered, the SC formulation will be sold as CloserTM SC. Field studies were conducted on pecans in New Mexico and Georgia, as well as on walnuts in California. Sulfoxaflor was tested against blackmargined aphid, Monellia caryella (Fitch), black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis), and European walnut aphid, Chromaphis juglandicola (Kaltenbach). Studies near Las Cruces, NM in 2008 and 2010 demonstrated that sulfoxaflor applied at rates from 25 to 50 grams a.i./ha provided excellent control of blackmargined aphid for 14 to 21 days. Applying similar rates in Tifton, GA in 2010, sulfoxaflor gave excellent control of blackmargined aphid for 28 days and black pecan aphid for 13 days. In Farmington, CA in 2008, European walnut aphid was controlled at rates of 25 grams or more for 14 days. Results from these studies demonstrate that sulfoxaflor will be an important new tool for aphid management in tree nuts.
TMTrademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC Sulfoxaflor is not yet registered with the U.S. EPA. Federal registration is pending. This is intended to provide technical information only and is not an offer for sale of product.
