Although a central question in evolutionary biology, the origin and maintenance of eusociality remains a delightfully complicated and controversial conundrum. Termites add important insights and twists to the discussion. This talk will summarize and synthesize recent research and theories regarding eusocial evolution in termites, and will relate them to broader debates concerning the importance of relatedness and kin selection as a drivers of eusocial evolution.
