The taxonomic identity of Neotropical alderflies has been gradually clarified. In this study, the previously undescribed male of Protosialis bifasciata (Hagen), from Cuba, is diagnosed and illustrated. The holotype of Protosialis bimaculata Banks, from Bolivia, is studied, and taxonomic implications discussed. The overall knowledge on Neotropical alderfly taxonomy will be synthesized. In a recent study, Liu & Yang proposed a genus level phylogeny of the subfamily Chauliodinae. Nonetheless, several fishfly genera were not included as part of their study. Here, an attempt is made to find a likely position of the genera Dysmicohermes, Madachauliodes, and Orohermes, through the study of actual specimens but taking Liu & Yang’s phylogeny as a reference framework.
