The Virtual Roach is a software package about insect anatomy that was developed as a technical reference and instructional aid. The interface links approximately 400 morphological terms with an extensive image collection, including scientific illustrations, photomicrographs, and scanning electron micrographs. Images are arranged in a manner permitting a virtual dissection of the American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana). At any stage of a dissection, users may identify an anatomical component by moving the cursor across it on the computer screen. As an autotutorial module, The Virtual Roach can function as a freestanding reference, an interactive bench-top guide, a pre-lab introduction, or a post-lab review tool. Because the extensive collection of colorful images is also accessible from lists of direct links, the program can provide dynamic visuals to augment lecture-format instruction as well.
