Pending Environmental Protection Agency registration, the Optimum® AcreMax™ line of corn hybrids from Pioneer, with above and below ground insect protection, will be the first refuge in-the-bag solution for corn producers. The effectiveness of substantially reduced in-the-bag refuge results from compatibility of three Bt-traits and target pests. The single trait providing corn rootworm protection is compatible based on very rare resistance and a mechanism of root protection that is predominantly antixenotic. Above ground insect protection is the result of two traits pyramided against key Lepidopteran targets. The pyramid creates compatibility with blended refuge over using either trait singly in a blended refuge configuration. This presentation provides an overview of the scientific rational leading to Optimum® AcreMax™.
