Plum curculio (PC), Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) is one of the most important native pests of cultivated pomes and stone fruits in northern regions east of Rocky Mountains. Novaluron and tebufenozide are insect growth regulators (IGRs) known to disrupt the normal growth and development of immature insects. With use of novaluron and tebufenozide to control other pests, a study was conducted using laboratory treated apple bioassays to determine if insect growth regulators, novaluron and tebufenozide have physiological effects on PC. Adult PCs were exposed to the apples sprayed with two commercial IGR compounds novaluron (Rimon 0.83EC) and tebufenozide (Confirm 2F). After the exposure, the adults were reared for 35 days with thinning apples that were regularly changed and held for larval emergence. Sub-samples were taken out and dissected for assessing the mating status and ovary development. Dissection results have shown that novaluron after adult exposure to treated fruit has no significant effect on the mating status and ovary development. However, analysis of larval emergence data has shown a significant difference between novaluron treated and untreated. Analysis of the data collected from tebufenozide treatments has shown no significant differences between the treated and untreated in both dissection and larval emergence. The results revealed that novaluron does not affect the mating or the egg development of exposed adults, but exhibits activity on subsequent generation of PC larvae via vertical transmission.
