A remarkable new species of Helcon from Colombia, with implications for helconine (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) phylogeny and classification

A newly described species from Colombia represents the first species of Helcon recorded from the neotropics. Possessing character states intermediate between Helcon and Wroughtonia, the discovery of this species tests the traditional boundaries of these two genera. A phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data suggests that recognition of Wroughtonia renders Helcon paraphyletic. The implications of this finding are discussed and a new classification scheme proposed.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Braconidae Helcon jamundii
Species 2: Hymenoptera Braconidae Helcon
Species 3: Hymenoptera Braconidae Wroughtonia
