The component of BIC pen ink that was responsible for trail-following activity by the Formosan subterannean termite Coptotermes formosanus was isolated and identified as 4-chlorophenol by TLC and GC-MS. Assays showed 2-, 3-, and 4-chlorophenol to be active trail-following substances. Traces of 2-phenoxyethanol were also present in the pen ink but were not associated with trail-following.
