Macahel: Combining apiculture and local biodiversity for rural development

Irfan Kandemir, kandemir@karaelmas.edu.tr, Karaelmas University, Department of Biology, Zonguldak, Turkey

Turkey is one of the important honey producing countries in the world. However, yield per colony is not at levels comparable to other big producers. A recent project in Northern Turkey at the Macahel (Camili) village used local bee ecotypes and latest breeding techniques. This integrative program led to increased productivity about 5 times the typical for colonies in Turkey. The hidden benefit is potential preservation of one of the biodiversity hot spots of the world by providing alternate means of rural development.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Apidae Apis mellifera (honey bee)
