Regulation of division of labor in social insects

Zachary Y. Huang, bees@msu.edu, Michigan State University, Department of Entomology, East Lansing, MI

Social insects have been seen as examplars of efficiency and hard work in many cultures. There are references to bees, wasps, and ants in religious texts. Indeed studying colony organization and division of labor in social insects lead to new insight into non-hierarchical organization. I will review the models and experimental evidence for division of labor and underlying worker behavioral development in social insects.
