When students are teachers: Entomology graduate students in the classroom

Jennifer Henke, jennifer.henke@email.ucr.edu, University of California - Riverside, Department of Entomology, Department of Entomology, University of California Riverside, Riverside, CA

Graduate students are often required to teach as part of their degree requirements. While this practice is an obvious necessity for those entering academia, all students benefit from teaching by developing better speaking skills and the ability to instruct others in unfamiliar concepts. Often, students find they have a better understanding of the subject after teaching. I will review departmental, teaching requirements, training given to graduate students prior to teaching, and differences in courses taught by graduate students (laboratory, discussion, lecture, or grading only). A survey will be administered to graduate students in entomology departments across the country to determine how satisfied they are with the training they have received and what changes they feel may be necessary in the teaching portion of their education.
