Fire ant biological control and potential benefits for conservation biology

Sanford D. Porter, sdp@nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu, USDA-ARS, Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology, 1600 SW 23rd Dr, Gainesville, FL

I will discuss aspects of fire ant biological control and potential benefits for conservation biology. Major topics of discussion will include: 1) the abundance of fire ants in North America as it relates to their escape from numerous natural enemies in South America, 2) potential self-sustaining biocontrol agents in South America, 3) the release and establishment of self-sustaining biocontrol agents in North America, and 4) potential benefits for the conservation of native biodiversity and wildlife abundance in the United States.
