Host plant interactions of the Diaprepes root weevil, a potential pantropical pest

Diaprepes abbreviatus is a generalist feeder belonging to the group of broad-nosed weevils (Otiorhynchinae). The host range of this species encompasses plants from diverse botanical families including crops such as sugarcane and citrus introduced into the insect’s geographical range. D. abbreviatus has become a major pest of citrus since its introduction into Florida in the 1960’s. Attempts to identify sources of host plant resistance within plant taxa that are sexually compatible with commercial citrus germplasm have been largely unsuccessful. Therefore, recent studies of host plant relations of D. abbreviatus have focused on plant species that have been shown to be repellent or toxic to adults and/or larvae and those with potential as cover or companion crops in citrus groves. Bioassay methods and results of effort to elucidate the biochemical identity of botanical compounds active against larvae and adults will be presented.
