History, spirit, and future directions of the RAMP program

Robert M. Nowierski, rnowierski@reeusda.gov, USDA-CSREES, 800 9th Street, SW, Washington, DC

Section 406 of the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998 (AREERA) (7 U.S.C. 7626) authorized the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a competitive grants program that provides funding for integrated, multifunctional agricultural research, extension, and education activities. The IPM Section 406 Program seeks to solve critical agricultural issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities. The Program is designed to fund the development of new integrated pest management (IPM) approaches or the improvement of existing IPM systems. As a result of the President's 2006 Budget, some administrative restructuring is anticipated for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program – Integrated Pest Management, which includes RAMP.
