Considerations for livestock pest management

Timothy J. Lysyk, lysyk@agr.gc.ca, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, 5403 First Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, Canada

Livestock production is a high value industry. Recent trends are presenting considerable challenges to producers. These include changing public demands concerning the safety and quality of livestock as food, limited genetic diversity of animals, outbreaks of animal disease, and increasing urban-agricultural conflict. As well, conventional chemical options for control of livestock arthropods are becoming increasingly limited. New approaches and advances in developing acceptable pest are required to meet the needs of the livestock industries in the future
