IPM in organic systems

Jerry DeWitt, jdewitt@iastate.edu, Iowa State University, Department of Entomology, Insectary Building Ames IA 50011-3140, Ames, IA

Organic agriculture has grown dramatically over the last decade with an average annual growth of approximately 20 percent in the US. Organic producers face similar pest problems as in conventional systems but must rely on different and creative approaches to pest management solutions. Organic production systems embrace holistic approaches to pest management on both large and small farms and ranches. Appropriate emerging technologies are adopted in working organic systems that allow them to compete with conventional agriculture. Research opportunities exist with organic producers to undertake applied field research in pest management. Funding sources are now available for organic research and education. Images of on-farm organic systems and pest management approaches will illustrate successful IPM strategies across the US.
