Insect Transgenesis

Thomas A. Miller, thomas.miller@ucr.edu, University of California, Professor Department of Entomology, Riverside, CA

Ability to insert genes into insects is the ticket by which Entomologists gain entry to the applied biotechnology field. Like any new breakthrough, this one offers new controversial possibilities. One is improving the Sterile Insect Technique; another is control of insect-vectored pathogens that cause disease in humans, animals or plants. Two examples will be described: transgenic pink bollworms and paratransgenic leafhoppers, which fits this year’s theme, “Sex, Bugs and Rock N’ Roll.”
