The North American species of Melittobia parasitic wasps: Current status and distribution

Robert W. Matthews, rmatthew@uga.edu and Jorge M. Gonzalez, jmgonzal@uga.edu. University of Georgia, Department of Entomology, 413 BioScience, Athens, GA

Of the 13 species of Melittobia recognized worldwide, eight have been reported from North America. The European M. acasta appears to have been introduced into various areas of Northern US and Canada, while the cosmopolitan M. australica is common in the southern US. Melittobia digitata appears to have a broad distribution throughout most of the US, and has been also collected in Mexico and Canada. Melittobia scapata and M. evansi are known only from the types collected in NY and GA respectively. M. chalybii, M. femorata and M. megachilis are apparently conspecific and occur widely in Eastern US. Priority rules dictate that the species should be called M. megachilis.
