The monophyly of Auchenorrhyncha, comprising Fulgoroidea (planthoppers) and Cicadomorpha (cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers, and spittlebugs), was called into question approximately 10 years ago, based on a small amount of DNA sequence data. However, relationships among the auchenorrhynchan superfamilies and other major related lineages, which include Coleorrhyncha (Peloridiidae) and the monophyletic Heteroptera, remained unclear. This presentation will highlight new molecular evidence for relationships among the higher hemipteran lineages, focusing on the question of auchenorrhynchan monophyly.
