2002-3 winter mortality of hemlock woolly adelgid in the Northeastern U.S

Kathleen S. Shields, USDA Forest Service, Northeastern Research Station, 51 Mill Pond Road, Hamden, CT and Carole A. S-J. Cheah, The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, 123 Huntington Street, New Haven, CT.

In March and April, 2003, branch tips were collected from 10 hemlock woolly adelgid-infested Eastern hemlocks at each of 36 sites in NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA and NC. Overwintering mortality of approximately 1,000 adelgids per site was estimated by assessing per cent mortality of sistens that had successfully molted to at least the 2nd nymphal stage.

Species 1: Homoptera Adelgidae Adelges tsugae (hemlock woolly adelgid)
Keywords: Eastern hemlock, mortality
