Effect of Roundup Ready transgenic wheat on greenbug, Russian wheat aphid, and wheat curl mite

Tom Harvey, Joe Martin, and Dallas Seifers. Kansas State University, 1232 240th Avenue, Hays, KS

Greenhouse and growth chamber tests were used to compare the effects of Monsanto's Roundup Ready transgenic Bob White wheat with normal non-transgenic Bob White wheat on greenbug, Russian wheat aphid, and wheat curl mite. There were no significant differences in population development for these three species between Roundup ready Bob White and normal Bob White wheat. The numbers of days required for greenbug or Russian wheat aphid to kill Round up ready and normal Bob White wheat was the same. Also, the transmission efficiency of wheat curl mites vectoring wheat spreak mosaic virus to Roundup Ready and normal Bob White did not differ significantly.

Species 1: Homoptera Aphididae Schizaphis graminum (Greenbug)
Species 2: Homoptera Aphididae Diuraphis noxia (Russian Wheat Aphid)
Species 3: Acari Eriophyidae Aceria tosichella (Wheat Curl Mite)
Keywords: Wheat, Roundup Ready
