Salmonella survivability in cockroach gut

An Nguyen and P. G. Koehler. University of Florida, Department of Entomology and Nematology, Bldg. 970, Natural Area Drive, Gainesville, FL

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica was orally inoculated to cockroaches and surveyed over time to determine survivability and replication. Cockroaches were disected and foregut, midgut, and hindgut was sampled quantitatively for Salmonella. Salmonella survival and infectious strategies may not be effective in cockroaches and therefore, may not offer any advantage for survival and replication.

Species 1: Blattaria Blattellidae Blattella germanica (German cockroach)
Species 2: Blattaria Blattidae Periplaneta americana (American cockroach)
