Mineral amendments to particle film, surround WP, affects mite population levels in apple

G. J. Puterka and Mike Glenn. USDA-ARS, Appalachian Fruit Research Station, 45 Wiltshire Rd, Kearneysville, WV

Kaolin based particle film, Surround WP, is a relatively new crop protectant that is effective against variety of insects in various crops. Surround WP usually has neutral effects against the mite complex in apple. The objective of this research was to determine what effects tank-mixing wettable sulfur, lime-sulfur or both with Surround WP has on the mite complex in apple. Although the primary purpose of amending Surround WP with these other minerals was to develop an organic alternative to controlling the many fungal and bacterial diseases that infect apple during the growing season, a desirable secondary benefit would be mite control. This information would be useful in developing a particle film based IPM program for apple.
