Biotic and abiotic factors contributing to red imported fire ant colony movement

Janet L. Kintz-Early and Clyde S. Gorsuch. Clemson University, Department of Entomology, 114 Long Hall, Clemson, SC

A foraging arena with vertical nests at each end was used to study red imported fire ant colony movement. Fire ant colonies were allowed to establish themselves within one of the vertical nests and stimuli was applied to encourage movement to the opposite vertical nest. Stimuli applied included shading, physical disruption of the colony, mechanical vibration and distance to a food source. Results will be discussed.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Formicidae Solenopsis invicta (red imported fire ant)
Keywords: ant farm, foraging
