Production of hibiscus using IPM

Scott Ludwig, Department of Entomology, Texas Cooperative Extension, Department of Entomology, P.O. Box 38, Overton, TX

Changes in Texas Department of Agriculture regulations involving pest presence at a nursery or greenhouse have made use of IPM more feasible for Texas ornamental producers. Eight demonstration greenhouses have been established at a hibiscus producer’s facility. Half of the greenhouses are being managed using an approved IPM plan and half using conventional practices. Educational programs are being developed and delivered using the demonstration greenhouses. These include a series of evening meetings throughout the year, a web page documenting the process, and an informational CD based on implementation of IPM in the demonstration greenhouses. At the end of the crop cycle the costs and benefits associated with plants produced using an IPM strategy compared to conventional management strategies will be evaluated. The effectiveness of the IPM and extension programs will be discussed.

Species 1: Homoptera Aleyrodidae (whitefly)
