Revision of the Palearctic species of Trissolcus reveals a multitude of longstanding junior synonyms that contributed to an unnavigable classification. In addition to cleaning up the pre-existing taxonomic mess, a small number of new species are described and identification tools are provided based on specimens from a wide geographical distribution. Experimental data on instraspecific variability conducted at the USDA/BIIRU laboratory has enabled us to identify characters that should not be used for species identification or delimitation.
