Humanity is contingent on the planet's life systems. A sustainable global food supply must therefore maintain and nurture the integrity of the biosphere. Additionally, equitable access to food and freedom from hunger must be built into global development and socioeconomic systems. Agroecology integrates the ecological and social sciences that support these goals, with the perspective that there are matters of worldview and values that must be recognized as driving scientific objectives and choices. To improve the human prospect, the industrial approach to agriculture must be reconciled with a worldview and values that prioritize human and ecological wellbeing over extraction for short-term and inequitable gains.
