Insects, ticks, mites, and other arthropods found on animals that humans keep around as pets or for companionship can transfer to people, producing skin problems and transmitting disease agents.  This will cover ectoparasites on cats and dogs, as well as those associated with creatures like pot-bellied pigs, gerbils, hamsters, rats, mice, goats, backyard chickens, parrots, and so on.
