Essential oils as repellent agents against Pochazia shantungensis (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae)

Pochazia shantungensis is currently occurred as a sporadic insect in Korea from 2012. Host plants is known 32 kinds of woody plant including fruit trees such as apples, blueberries, plums, grapes and peaches, and 19 kinds of herbal plant. They have mainly given the direct damage to the phloem and xylem by ovipositing behavior on the first-year branches. They are flied into the orchards from nearest forest for oviposition. It is too difficult to chemical control because the oviposition timing and the harvest of crops is overlapped. Therefore, in order to minimize the damage of a P. shantungensis, we tried to search for the repellent agents derived from plants. Twenty three essential oils and extract of Clerodendrum trichotomum were examined the olfactory test using a Y-tube olfactometer. As a result, peppermint oil was only showed more than 80% repellent effect. When treatments of the 0.1µ°, 0.5µ°, 1µ° of peppermint oil, repellent effects against P. shantungensis was gradually increased. As a result of analyzing with GC-MS, main components of peppermint oil were 1,8-cineol (4.65%), isomenthyl acetate (8.04%), menthone (23.84%) and menthol (53.69%) as monoterpene compound. These main monoterpenes might be showed the synergistic effects only together with other components, rather than to cause the repellent effect alone.
