The genus Acrophyma Bergroth currently contains two species, the Andean A. cumingii (Westwood) (distributed in Chile and Argentina), and the Neotropical A. bicallosa (Stål) (distributed in Colombia and South Brazil).  The examination of types and new material reveals that the Brazil population belongs to an undescribed species in this group. A morphological analysis of the genus indicates that the Neotropical species are very different to the Andean species, and should be placed in a new genus. This is also supported by biogeographical relationships. The higher classification of the Acanthosomatidae is discussed, and it is concluded that the current classification needs revision. New distributional records for the species of this group are provided. A pictorial key to the species is included.
