A survey for Gomphid dragonflies was conducted on two blackwater streams in the Sandhills of North Carolina to establish whether or not G. septima was present in the watersheds. Although this species was not recorded in the survey, at least 7 other Gomphids and 6 other dragonflies were detected, along with a number of other significant arthropods. This survey detected at least one species of aquatic insect which had not been detected in North Carolina in 40 years, and establishes the significance of these streams to the biodiversity of North Carolina.
