Cyazypyr™ (cyantraniliprole, DPX-HGW86) is the second anthranilic diamide insecticide (IRAC Group 28) to be commercialized by DuPont but is the first to show control of a cross-spectrum of pest species. It acts at the ryanodine receptor site in insects causing interference in pest muscle function in affected individuals. This action results in rapid impairment of muscle action that manifests in reduced oviposition, disruption of mating, feeding cessation, impaired locomotion and other muscle-controlled activities. The actions combine to provide outstanding plant protection from direct damage from by pest feeding scars and ovipositor stings, and also from the indirect damage via the transmission of plant disease pathogens. The controlled pest groups include important sucking pest species like aphids, leafhoppers, planthoppers, psyllids and whiteflies, and also raspings pests like thrips. The chewing pest groups controlled include members of the Orders Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera. Based on available in-house DuPont data, Cyazypyr™ has excellent efficacy on important Dipteran pest groups among which are some of the most damaging and economically-important fruit flies such as Drosophia suzukii (spotted wing drosophila) (Drosophilidae), as well as Tephritid species like Ceratitis capitata (Mediterranean fruit fly), Bactrocera oleae (olive fruit fly), Rhagoletis cingulata (cherry fruit fly), Rhagoletis cerasi (European cherry fruit fly), Rhagoletis indifferens (western cherry fruit fly), and Rhagoletis pomonella (apple maggot). In addition to the high levels of efficacy of pest control, Cyazypyr™ provides outstanding plant protection and crop improvement attributes due to the rapid cessation of pest feeding.  DuPont has developed various formulated product brands that can be used in various application methods for fruit fly control such as full coverage foliar sprays, bait systems and combinations with fly attractants. Cyazypyr™ has minimal impact on predators and parasitoids, and thus is an excellent complement to IPM programs. It has low impact and large margins of safety to other non-target organisms. Cyazypyr™ also degrades readily in the environment and has excellent environmental fate profile. Examples of field results of fruit fly pest control and fruit protection will be presented.
