Bed bugs have displayed a wide range of behaviors such as negative phototaxis and positive thigmotaxis.  We evaluated the behavior of male, female, and first instar bed bugs contacting smooth surfaces. Some aversion to smooth surfaces was found in male and female bed bugs but aversion was very strong with first instar nymphs. Bed bug aversion to smooth surfaces could play a significant roll in monitoring and controlling bed bugs.
