Seventeen-year periodical cicadas, Magicicada spp., of brood II emerged in central Connecticut in 2013.  The distribution of M. septendecim, the most widespread of the three known species of 17-year periodical cicadas, was similar to that during the last emergence in 1996.  Surprisingly, a second species of 17-year cicada, the relatively uncommon M. septendecula, was discovered in south-central Connecticut for the first time.  This species emerged in a hickory-dominated broad-leaved forest, where its density was estimated to be about 6,000 nymphs per hectare.
