Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier and Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier are two decapitating fly species released in Louisiana as biological control agents against the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren. A four-year study compared red imported fire ant populations in areas where phorid flies are well established vs. areas where they recently started colonizing. The size of red imported fire ant populations was characterized using the Harlan’s index rating. Phorid fly abundance was monitored by fly collection. Social forms of red imported fire ant colonies were determined by PCR.
