During June 2012, "Coleoptera Diversity and Systematics" was taught as part of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) specialty course curriculum. Nine students, three instructors, and a guest lecturer participated in classroom, laboratory, and field elements of the course. Students developed small group and individual field projects, the results of which were presented at the end of the course. The primary course venue was La Selva Biological Station, Heredia, Costa Rica, with a visit to Veragua Rainforest Research and Adventure Park, Limon, Costa Rica. Student-led discoveries included a new species of the staphylinid genus Leptochromus and a new country record for the staphylinid subfamily Leptotyphlinae.
